Innova Aviar

TOC

In The Hand

The Aviar is a beadless mold with a smooth rounded rim and a flat top for improved grip. The rim has a comfortable depth of shallowness no matter how you configure your fingers on the rim. If you enjoy a beaded putter then look to other molds including the JK Pro Aviar and KC Pro Aviar. The Aviar is known for producing a clean, consistent release. No matter your preference of feel, there’s an Aviar for you.

Flight Path: How The Innova Aviar Flies

When the Aviar is thrown at slow speed for putting, it holds the line you put it on with neutral stability and a predictable finish. When utilized as a throwing putter, the Aviar is an incredibly straight flyer and has surprising torque resistance.

stability graph

The Innova Aviar is the gold standard for putt and approach discs across the globe and one of the most popular putters in disc golf. More World Championships have been won with this putter than all other putters combined. That’s simply a fact.

As a result of its success, the Aviar, also known as Aviar Putt & Approach, has the widest selection of models and plastics. Aviar variations include the KC Pro Aviar, JK Pro Aviar, Yeti Aviar, Aviar3 and AviarX3. The Aviar is known for its neutral stability which allows this putt and approach disc to hold its line on various angles and speeds.

There’s a reason the Innova DX Aviar Putt and Approach disc is sold in thousands of starter sets every year … because it works. Many players never stop using it.

Power Levels Compared

Beginner disc golfers will enjoy the Aviar as it will give you consistent results with both push and spin putts. For approach shots and longer throws, the Aviar will have reliable glide with fade at the end of flight for players with slower arm speed. Included in thousands of Innova Starter Packs every year! Recommended. Great starter for putt and approach.

Distances 250 feet and in are easily reachable. What’s more, it’s a great teaching disc for beginners to dial-in their technique and produce accurate approaches.

Plastic Types

DX Aviar

This is an affordable way to get your hands on an Aviar. This baseline plastic has a tendency to beat in fairly quickly which can make the flight path straighter. DX is the least overstable Innova plastic.

DX Aviar Red

Fantastic all-weather grip. Fingers love these discs.

Grip

Good longevity for occasional play, however, DX is the least durable of Innova plastics.

Durability

Glow DX Aviar

This plastic will feel and fly similar to a DX Aviar, however there is one glaring exception, this baby glows in the dark! Reach for a Glow Aviar when you want to play after dark.

Grip

Unique Velvet-like DX feel

Durability

Similar to DX in that it is the least durable Innova plastic. Easy to break in, though.

Glow DX Aviar 3

R-Pro Aviar

If your prefer your putter to have a softer more gummy, flexy feel, the R-Pro Aviar is the disc for you.

Grip

It’s the most grippy of Innova plastics. If you have to play in wet weather, this is the plastic to use.

Durability

It Outlasts DX plastic but is not as durable as other Pro plastics.

Aviar

XT Aviar

XT Aviars are a real fan favorite. This putter will be slightly more firm than R-Pro yet less firm than a KC Pro mold – a combination that’s hard to find at XT’s affordable price. Like Pro plastic, XT plastic stability slots between DX and the premium plastics.

Grip

Firm. Tacky grip. But still easy to release. Ranks among the best for grip.

Durability

It is the most durable of all the Pro plastics. One notch below Champion and Star.

GStar Aviar

This shiny plastic will give you the Star plastic look but with enhanced grip and more flexibility. This premium plastic will retain its flight path longer than baseline plastic and is ideal in cold weather. Least overstable of the premium plastics.

Grip

Best among our premium plastics. If your hands struggle to grip and rip Champion and Star plastic, GStar will provide plenty of traction

Durability

Ranks among our longest lasting plastics. GStar flexibility helps it absorb tree hits, too.
GStar Aviar Putter
Champion Aviar Blue

Champion Aviar

This plastic is designed for longevity. The Champion Aviar will be slightly more overstable than other plastics and will retain its flight characteristics the longest among Innova plastics.

Grip

Smooth grip sufficient for mild, dry conditions. Champion plastic offers the least grip of Innova plastics. Best have a backup putter in a different plastic for wet conditions.

Durability

What Champion plastic lacks in grip it certainly makes up for in strength. Top of the class in durability.
Halo Star Aviar Blue

Halo Star Aviar

The putting show begins early when you have a beautiful two-color Halo Star Aviar in your hands. Halo plastic is known to be slightly more overstable and have more glide than typical Star plastic.

Grip

Excellent grip that bests the desirable Star plastic

Durability

Among Innova’s most durable plastic. Just a notch below Champion.

Star Aviar

For those that love Champion discs, but want a more all-around grip, and a tad less overstability, then Star plastic is for you. Flight characteristics will retain their integrity long into the life of the disc which is a huge benefit for a putter.

Grip

Excellent middle of the road grip between GStar and Champion plastic. The perfect compromise!

Durability

Star plastic’s strength is legendary. Get ready for your Star discs to grow old with you.

Low Power / Newer Player

At this point, players will begin to unlock the Aviar’s consistent flight path and start to see putts fall from circle two. You will be able to play with the release angle for approach shots and enjoy a multitude of flights. Recommended. Full send!

Medium Power / Intermediate Player

This will be your go-to putt and approach disc. Everything from push to spin putts to jump putts and distance throw-ins. There is a reason this disc golf putter has been in the bag of more World Champions than every other putter combined. It works! Recommended. Green Light!

Collector Aviars

Every collector has their share of Aviars. The disc has been around for so long and has so many iterations that it’s impossible not to have at least a few in your collection. Like other popular discs, older stock runs are quite collectible including the “Hands” DX Aviar, “Chains” DX Aviar, and “Circle” DX Aviar, all referencing prominent features on the discs’s vintage stamps.

Pumpkins

Each year, as fall approaches, Innova harvests a special kind of pumpkin: select discs with Jack-O-Lantern stamps. It’s a Halloween tradition that’s just the right amount of spooky. Models offered have varied over the years but many years have featured an Aviar of some sort.

DGU Original Designs

In many cases, artwork can elevate a disc from cool to completely awesome. At DGU, we pride ourselves on pairing awesome discs with incredible artwork. In years past we’ve applied some of our best designs to the Aviar including the: XXL Legendary Aviar, Dr Putter, and Lucky Chains. See if we’ve got a DGU Original Aviar here.

Factory Second Aviars

If you are looking to buy an Aviar for less $$$, an Innova Factory Second Aviar is the way to go. F2 discs are discounted because they have minor blemishes and/or multiple stamps. They perform the same as stock discs. Keep in mind that F2 models and plastics can vary. Check what F2 Aviars we have now. Hit us up if you are looking for something specific: info@discgolfunited.

Specialty Aviars

Occasionally you’ll see the Aviar Putt and Approach disc in limited run plastics like Galactic XT, Nexus, and even Metal Flake Star.

In The Wind

Anybody out there like putting in the wind?? Me neither. The Aviar holds true to its flight path in mild to moderate wind conditions but will still lift in a headwind and drop in a tailwind. Spin putts can help minimize the effects as it can “cut through” the elements, but heavy winds will still be trouble. Look to the overstable AviarX3 mold in windy conditions to give you a stable flight.

Prized Aviars include the Ching Full Color Aviar, Paul McBeth McPro Aviar, and the James Conrad Tour Series Aviar from several years ago. KC (Ken Climo) Aviars and JK (Juliana Korver) Aviars are often classified by the number of World Championships listed on the stamp. Older editions like the 3-time World Champ or 4-time World Champ JK Aviar, or the 9-time, 10-time, and 11-time World Champ KC Aviar will get any disc collector’s attention.

Disc Variations

Innova AviarX3

This is the most overstable Aviar mold and it is also beadless. Great for upshots in the wind for both forehand and backhand. Also a wonderful choice for windy conditions on the putting green. This is Jeremy “Big Jerm” Koling’s signature disc, which he uses for his forehand and backhand approaches 300 feet and in.

Star AviarX3 blue

What do these numbers mean

Aviar3

The Aviar3 is an ideal putter for short drives, aggressive upshots, and windy putts. The Aviar3 has the same comfortable grip you’d expect in an Aviar putter but with a distinctive flat top. In the hand you feel the lower profile. It feels fast. Even better, it can handle the speed.

DX Aviar3 Purple

What do these numbers mean

KC Pro Aviar Light Blue

KC Pro Aviar

The KC (Ken Climo) Pro Aviar is made from the Aviar Driver mold in a firm blend of Pro-line Plastic for players who prefer a stiffer disc. This is the preferred model of professional players due in large part to its firmer flight plate. Mostly used as a putter and the occasional approach shot. Endorsed by 12-time World Champion Ken Climo.

What do these numbers mean

Aviar Driver

What do you get when you take the Aviar disc and put a noticeable bead along the rim’s exterior? The Aviar Driver! Also known as the Aviar Big Bead, it flies similar to the Aviar Putt and Approach, but with added overstability at the flight’s end. Excellent throwing putter for short to medium length tee shots and approaches. This is the same mold used for the KC, JK, and Yeti Aviars. Although not a stock option it is still seen in limited runs.

Star Aviar Driver

What do these numbers mean

Pro JK Aviar Purple

JK Pro Aviar

The JK (Juliana Korver) Pro Aviar is made from the Aviar Driver mold in a special blend of durable Pro Plastic that is more flexible and grippier than the other Aviar models. It has the same flight characteristics as the KC Aviar. Great for putting and short range power shots.

What do these numbers mean

Yeti Aviar

The Yeti Aviar is a straight flying putter with a unique, slightly concave top which allows for a lower profile and straighter flight than our other big bead models (KC Pro, JK Pro & Aviar Driver). Excellent putter and the straight flight of the Yeti is extremely useful in the woods.

Yeti Pro Aviar Pink

What do these numbers mean

Classic Aviar

The Classic Aviar has a firm grip and is the straightest flying Aviar model throughout its flight. Reliable in all conditions and is excellent for drives, approach shots and putts. This is the durable beadless model that started it all.

Innova Aviar Comparisons

DX Aviar

distance graph

Aviar vs Dart

The Dart is a straight flier and faster putt and approach disc than the Aviar. Nate Sexton has made the Dart famous for cashing long range spinny putts with ease. The Dart has more glide and will finish straighter than the Aviar.

vs

Aviar vs Colt

The Colt is great at shaping S-curve putt and approach shots when needed. It is slightly faster than the Aviar and has a touch more glide. The difference is in the high speed turn. The Colt will flip when thrown flat with speed and then engage a consistent fade.

distance graph

vs

Aviar vs Rhyno

The Rhyno is a beefcake of a putt and approach disc. It is the same speed as the Aviar, however it has very minimal glide. Its fade rating of three means it will dump to the ground in all wind conditions. Use this as a consistent putter in windy conditions.

Best Uses For An Innova Aviar

Push Putt

The Aviar is ideal for the push putt as it flies straight at slower speeds. Push putts have lower spin and have a tendency to hyzer out quicker. The Aviar allows for a straighter flight path and for the chains to get in the way more often.

Spin Putt

This is where the Aviar thrives. A spin putter will love the straight flight path regardless of the angle of release. The consistent finish allows for spin putts from deep in circle two. A clean grip allows for a crisp, spinny release every time.

Anhyzer Putt

If you are an anhyzer putter or simply need this shot in your toolbelt, the Aviar will give you consistent results. The end of flight fade allows for a putt that will consistently fight back to flat on an anhyzer release.

Jump Putt

Outside the circle? Look no further than the Aviar. Here we have a disc that gives you consistency at long range. Heaven forbid you airball your putt, the Aviar will give you a shorter comebacker due to the end of flight fade.

Distance Putt

Trust the Aviar from deep to give you dependable results. Give it some speed and the glide of the Aviar will do the work for you. This shot is why so many World Champions bag the Aviar.

Backhand Approach <250 Feet

Try various plastics for your approach shots. The Aviar is surprisingly torque resistant and premium plastics will give you more stability. Also try various molds of the Aviar for different in-hand feel. Reach for the AviarX3 for more overstability or the Yeti Aviar for the straightest flight.

Who should throw an aviar?

The Innova Aviar is an excellent choice for any disc golfer looking to add consistency and reliability to their bag. Just about every disc golfer, from veterans to newbies, has something positive to say about it.
